What To Know

The stabbing occurred as students were leaving school for the day, and involved both students and nonstudents, according to district spokesperson Fermin Leal.

Images from the scene show numerous police vehicles and evidence markers outside the front entrance of the school.

At least two suspects fled the scene and are being searched for by the authorities. The names of the suspects and victims have not yet been released.

Officer Natalie Garcia from the Santa Ana Police Department told Fox 11: "At this time our officers are coordinating with school police to set up a perimeter in the hopes to locate the two suspects who remain outstanding. At this time we believe all parties to be Santa Ana High School students."

Garcia also confirmed that the weapon, believed to be a knife, had not yet been found.

The Santa Ana Unified School District said in a statement: "Please be assured that there is no immediate threat to the school or surrounding area. The safety and well-being of our students and staff remain our highest priority."

Santa Ana is a city of around 300,000 people about 30 miles southeast of Los Angeles.

What People Are Saying

Aaron Chavez, a friend of the deceased, described him as kind and funny. "Everyone liked him. I feel like it's just when someone doesn't like you in general, like, they just get mad, and something escalates to something else," he told ABC7 Eyewitness News.

He added: "To see him gone is to see a piece of you gone... It was a quick dap up, a quick good morning. I wish that would have been a hug. I didn't know that was the last time I was going to see him."

A student witness said he "saw people running to see what was going on" as the incident took place.

"It's just something crazy to think about. Even if you don't know them personally, like it's just crazy to think that somebody you went to school with ever is just not here anymore," they told Fox 11.

What Happens Next

An investigation into the incident is ongoing. Authorities are still searching for two suspects.
